CDBG (Community Development Block Grant) is a program of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Under CDBG states receive an allocation of funds for local community development use.
In Salt Lake County large cities -- 50,000 and above in population -- receive their funds directly from HUD and are known as entitlement cities. Cities under 50,000 can access CDBG funds through the state or the Urban County program administered by Salt Lake County.
Congress developed the CDBG program to benefit low-income and moderate-income persons. CDBG funds are used to revitalize lower-income neighborhoods through housing rehabilitation, public facilities, and infrastructure improvements and the by providing public services.
The CDBG program has enriched lives especially for the less fortunate by providing facilities and services where other financial resources were not available to meet neighborhood needs.
Projects eligible for CDBG funding include:
- Child care centers
- Community centers
- Health clinics and medical equipment
- Fire protection facilities and equipment
- Water and sewer systems
- Senior citizen centers
